11619 - Eu Topic: Development Of Ict In Eastern Europe
In Eastern Europe and in the Commonwealth of Independent States (“CIS”), which is composed of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine, the development of Information and Communications Technology (“ICT”) has been very slow. This is partly due to an obsolete infrastructure inherited from the USSR. Several development programmes are aimed at helping this region overcome its difficulties. These Programmes are notably conducted by the United Nations Development Programme (“UNDP”), which is the United Nations’ global development network, and which seeks to capture the potential of ICT to advance sustainable human development and fight poverty. UNDP’s interventions include a wide range of sectors from long-distance education, telemedicine, etc.
