Combating Cyberprivacy, an article by Amanda V. Dwight

IBLS is pleased to present an article prepared by Intellectual Property attorney Amanda V. Dwight. Here Ms. Dwight outlines an effective way to deal with the cyberpiracy aspects in registering domain names for other businesses.

Many businesses believe they have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and engage in protracted litigation to combat cyberpiracy-the predatory and bad-faith act of registering domain names for the purpose of reselling them to trademark owners or interested parties or to commercially benefit from the use of a known trademark. In actuality, there is an efficient and relatively inexpensive procedure one can undertake to take back a domain name which is confusingly similar to one's trademark from a cyberpirate.

From the IBLS Database - Digital Music Piracy and Statutory Damage Availability

The IBLS database has summaries covering all aspects of Internet Law. One such coverage area is online copyright protection. The following is an abstract for digital music privacy issues:

Copyright provisions have been applied to Internet distribution of digital music. The availability of digital music is becoming more common even despite all the litigation and cease and desist letters that have been used to resolve the issue. The culpability of Internet sites has come under fire many times. Rock stars Bob Dylan, Billy Joel and James Taylor filed a lawsuit against Vivendi Universal's MP3.com music Web site for allegedly distributing their songs without authorization. Statutory damages may be sought.

IBLS summaries are available via subscription or individual sale. To read the rest of the digital piracy summary in its entirety at no cost, please click here
