INTERNET LAW - Bermuda ranked 15th on “e-Readiness”

 Bermuda ranks 15th overall in a global 2007 “e-readiness” survey conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit, up five places from 20th last year. The business elite annual survey was published today and was the second year that Bermuda was included in the survey. Once again Bermuda placed 3rd overall in the world in the category of legal environment just behind Hong Kong and Australia. The ranking evaluates the technological, economic, political and social assets of 69 countries and their cumulative impact on their respective information economies. Bermuda is the only UK Overseas Territory to be included in the survey which allows comparison with other countries in the six categories relevant to e-readiness.

 According to the Minister of Information, Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Dr. Edmond Mansoor. Dr. Mansoor informed that Southern Caribbean Fiber, a company owned by the French Group Loret, will install Antigua and Barbuda’s undersea fiber optic cable, which will increase connectivity and bring economic benefits for the island. Currently, Cables and Wireless is the only company with fiber optic cable in Antigua and Barbuda, situation that creates monopoly and reduces opportunity for the community.
