Electronic Filing Of Patent Applications

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) is offering the electronic filing of patent applications. These applications reduce the turn-around process of the patent application, reduce postage fees and costs and give the applicant greater time availability since the documents can be transmitted to the U.S. PTO during non-business hours and on weekends.

The following questions have been addressed in this article:

What types and parts of the patent application can be filed using EFS?
Is there a limit on the amount of the files that can be submitted to the EFS?
How will the filing date be calculated if the files have to be filed via compact discs?
What about the maintenance of the secrecy of the patent application?
Is there a comparable electronic filing systems for trademarks?
