Dubai's International Arbitration Law

On September 1, 2008, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Ruler of Dubai, signed the Arbitration Law of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). The new legislation, which repeals previous legislation in this area, is based on the UNCITRAL Model Law of 1985, as amended in 2006.

The following questions have been addressed in this article:

What are the main characteristics of Dubai's arbitration law?
Who did draft the law?
To who is the DIFC Arbitration forum open?
To what extent are arbitrators empowered to issue injunctions under the law?
