Value Added Tax in Hungary

The Hungarian value added tax (VAT) rules are similar to the EU rules although certain differences do exist in the framework of regulation and definition. VAT applies to imports, usually at the standard VAT rate of 20%. Hungary also has a preferential rate of 15%, but this is to rise to 20% in September 2006. The VAT represents a challenge to doing business because it sharply increases the cost to the final customer.
