Digitizing Libraries In Mexico To Be Published On The Internet; A Copyright Infringement Issue.

Some Mexican libraries have been planning to convert printed books and magazines that they bought to loan out to public to a digital format. The reason for doing this is to make the material easier to access over their Internet web pages. However, according to Mexican Copyright Law (MCL), libraries DO NOT have the right to reproduce any material without the permission of their authors and publishers, even when they are not getting any economic benefit.

The following questions have been addressed in this article:

How can Libraries properly digitize a published work they have in their hard copy collection without infringing Mexican law?
What would be the consequences if a Library were to be sued by a publisher or author?
What kind of material would be recommended for libraries to digitize?
